Exploring the Psychology of Gay Men
Welcome to boy meets therapy, a platform exploring the psychological and lived experiences of gay and bisexual (Queer) men. Curated by New York City therapist Dustin Oliver, MHC-LP, MA, this platform blends clinical research with real conversations about vulnerability, relationships, friendship, identity, and culture through the experiences of gay and bisexual men.
Much of our understanding of human psychology has historically been shaped by heterosexual experiences and assumptions. boy meets therapy seeks to broaden that perspective by examining established psychological concepts through the distinct experiences of gay and bisexual men.
Therapy That Centers the Gay Experience
Much of traditional psychological theory and clinical training has developed around heterosexual experiences, often overlooking the distinct developmental, social, and relational experiences that gay people face. While LGBTQ+-affirming therapy represents important progress, affirmation alone does not necessarily mean these experiences are fully integrated into treatment.
Our relationships with identity, sexuality, masculinity, intimacy, and belonging are shaped by the social and cultural environments in which we develop. These experiences can influence how we understand ourselves, relate to others, and navigate relationships throughout our lives.
Rather than treating sexual orientation as an isolated aspect of identity, I consider how it intersects with psychological development, relationships, and emotional well-being.
I offer individual therapy to individuals throughout New York State

Meet Dustin!
I'm Dustin Oliver, MHC-LP, MA, a New York City mental health counselor and the creator of boy meets therapy. My clinical work focuses on the psychological and social experiences of gay, bisexual, and queer men, particularly in areas of identity development, relationships, sexuality, and minority stress. I created this platform because I noticed a huge gap in the research, dialogue, and clinical practice of gay mental health.
Beyond the therapy room, I'm interested in making psychological research accessible to a broader audience and encouraging more nuanced conversations about the experiences of gay men.
